MARY J BLIGE New York City, December, 1994
It was a brick-cold day in New York and I was on a mission.
Mary J Blige had just released “My Life” a weeks earlier and I was shooting editorial portraits for i-D magazine.
At twenty-three yeas old, I was only 6-months into my career as a professional photographer and was still working on getting the “professional” part right, being punctual and such.
Mary had held a press function at the Land Rover HQ’s on the West Side Highway, and had finished early. I had to fly out my Yellow Cab and intercept her on the highway before she took off in her Limo.
The press event left Mary la little tight and she didn’t want to get out of the Limo. It was early December and brick on the windy highway, but I had a mission to complete. I had to beg her to come out of the Limo so we could create the photos. She finally agreed. The whole situation was raw and even limiting, nevertheless I found the best angles and light and managed to get a great shot from the few rolls of film I used. Although reserved, Mary looks beautiful and the colors and style are on point.
